The Fediverse is more than just Mastodon!
If you like to share photos you might want to check out @pixelfed, an Instagram-style photo sharing network on the Fediverse.
You can find out more and sign up at:
https://pixelfed.org
PixelFed uses the same federation protocol as Mastodon, which means Mastodon users can follow people on PixelFed and vice versa. You can try following a PixelFed account right now such as @Iancylkowski or @JoseMel or @connyduck
You can use PixelFed through a web browser, and there are also free open Android apps like @PixelDroid and FediLab (@apps).

More info and sites to sign up on are at:
https://joinbookwyrm.com
Because it uses the same ActivityPub protocol that powers the rest of the Fediverse, you can follow BookWyrm accounts from Mastodon etc.
For example, the lead developer of BookWyrm has an account at @mouse

You can follow, like, reply etc with people on other platforms from within Mastodon. If you post an image in Mastodon, it will appear as a photo post to people in PixelFed. If you reply to a PeerTube video within Mastodon, it will appear as a comment below that video in PeerTube etc.
Because Fedi platforms use the same protocol to talk to each other, the Fediverse blurs the line between platforms.
Some Fedi platforms have features that are only accessible to people with an account on that platform, for example posting a video on PeerTube or reviewing a book on BookWyrm.
Because each Fediverse account is for the site you signed up on, you would need separate accounts to get access to all the features on each platform, but at least some interaction is usually possible without separate accounts.
Technical Issues •
FediTips •
Having said that, you can use your existing account with different interfaces. For example, Pinafore (https://pinafore.social/) lets you log into your existing Mastodon with a totally different interface. In theory, I guess there could be a range of different interfaces for use with the same account, including those interfaces used by other platforms?

You can find out more including places to sign up at:

Just like the rest of the Fediverse, PeerTube uses ActivityPub protocols, so you can follow and interact with PeerTube from Mastodon etc.
For example, you could follow @craftykat or @chriswere or @mrfunkedude and interact with their videos entirely from within Mastodon.
Good instances to explore include:
https://tilvids.com
https://share.tube
https://greatview.video
https://vidcommons.org
https://diode.zone
https://tube.tchncs.de
https://video.blender.org
https://media.privacyinternational.org
http://conf.tube
https://video-cave-v2.de
You can create your own PeerTube site without tech knowledge through managed hosting services like https://federation.spacebear.ee and https://cloud68.co/instances.html
There's a dedicated free open source PeerTube app called TubeLab available through @fdroidorg and Google Play.

As it uses the ActivityPub protocol, you can follow and interact with accounts on Mastodon etc from Friendica, and vice versa.
You can also follow RSS feeds as if they were Fediverse accounts, and when an RSS item is published on that feed it will appear in your timeline as if it's a Fediverse post.
You can write very long posts on Friendica, you don't have to worry about character limits.
You can use Friendica accounts through the FediLab app, available on @fdroidorg and Google Play.
You can follow the latest news about Friendica on its official blog at @news

It features a minimalist interface to avoid distracting from the text itself, and is sort of like a Fediverse alternative to Medium.
Because it's part of the Fediverse, you can follow WriteFreely accounts from Mastodon etc.
You can find sites to sign up on at:
https://writefreely.org/instances
It works entirely through your web browser, or you can use an app from https://writefreely.org/apps
You can also create your own instance without technical knowledge through a managed hosting service such https://writefreely.host or https://cloud68.co/instances.html

You will need to install a free open source plugin called ActivityPub For WordPress:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub
Note that WordPress the platform is different from wordpress.com the hosting site. Wordpress.com does not allow installation of this kind of plugin (unless you pay an expensive fee).
But you don't need to use wordpress.com to use WordPress! Because WordPress is free open source software, much every hosting provider in the world offers a WordPress site for a few dollars a month, and this kind of indpendently hosted WordPress is what the plugin will work on.

If you can't see any posts, try searching for the URL of a post instead of the URL of the user. For example, try searching for https://oerfoundation.org/2021/11/03/french-adaptation-of-oeru-course-builds-technical-capability-for-oer-capacity-development-in-multiple-languages/

Because Funkwhale is part of the Fediverse, you can follow its accounts from Mastodon etc. For example, the account @bytebitmusic_chiptunes is on Funkwhale.
Funkwhale is compatible with many different apps including those using the Subsonic standard. There's a list at https://funkwhale.audio/en_US/apps
You can create your own Funkwhale instance without any tech knowledge using managed hosting services such as https://cloud68.co/instances/funkwhale or https://weingaertner-it.de/index.php/produkt-kategorie/funkwhale-hosting

If you just want to try it out, there's a test site at https://demo.mobilizon.org which is reset every 24 hours.
You can follow Mobilizon accounts from Mastodon etc. For example, @radio27 is a Mobilizon account that recommends psychedelic rock concerts in Berlin.
Alternatively, Mobilizon accounts can also be followed through RSS/Atom or ICS/WebCal if preferred.

I just want to clarify one thing: On Mobilizon there are accounts and groups. Mobilizon brings into focus the communities, not so much the individual accounts. @radio27 for example is a group. You can follow groups, but not accounts.
This may sound a bit counterintuitive at first, but I love how @mobilizon tries to "reinvent" social media and not just copies or clones "Big Tech". π€

I mean, rather than using your #Mastodon login from one domain to log into #Pixelfed on an entirely different domain and into #PeerTube or #Hubzilla or #WriteFreely on yet another domain?
