It depends on what you mean by "use"!

You can follow, like, reply etc with people on other platforms from within Mastodon. If you post an image in Mastodon, it will appear as a photo post to people in PixelFed. If you reply to a PeerTube video within Mastodon, it will appear as a comment below that video in PeerTube etc.

Because Fedi platforms use the same protocol to talk to each other, the Fediverse blurs the line between platforms.

Some Fedi platforms have features that are only accessible to people with an account on that platform, for example posting a video on PeerTube or reviewing a book on BookWyrm.

Because each Fediverse account is for the site you signed up on, you would need separate accounts to get access to all the features on each platform, but at least some interaction is usually possible without separate accounts.

thanks. I was hoping it was more like single sign on where I could register for an account on another platform within the fediverse and authenticate with this one instead of the two being totally standalone.

There's no single sign on because the Fedi is made up of thousands of independently owned and run sites. (And this is deliberate, to stop anyone buying or interfering with the Fediverse.)

Having said that, you can use your existing account with different interfaces. For example, Pinafore (https://pinafore.social/) lets you log into your existing Mastodon with a totally different interface. In theory, I guess there could be a range of different interfaces for use with the same account, including those interfaces used by other platforms?

The different interfaces with the same account would make for a better user experience in my opinion. The SSO bit can work fine in the decentralized model since accounts are qualified with the domain of their home within the fediverse… and, in fact, Pinafore is an example of this working. Maybe things like #Bookwyrm and #Pixelfed will enable a similar login option that builds on what Mastodon client interfaces do today.

The best place to watch and share videos on the Fediverse is @peertube

Just like the rest of the Fediverse, PeerTube uses ActivityPub protocols, so you can follow and interact with PeerTube from Mastodon etc.

For example, you could follow @craftykat or @chriswere or @mrfunkedude and interact with their videos entirely from within Mastodon.

There's a dedicated free open source PeerTube app called TubeLab available through @fdroidorg and Google Play.

If you would like a more Facebook-style interface on the Fediverse, maybe you should try Friendica:

As it uses the ActivityPub protocol, you can follow and interact with accounts on Mastodon etc from Friendica, and vice versa.

You can also follow RSS feeds as if they were Fediverse accounts, and when an RSS item is published on that feed it will appear in your timeline as if it's a Fediverse post.

You can write very long posts on Friendica, you don't have to worry about character limits.

You can use Friendica accounts through the FediLab app, available on @fdroidorg and Google Play.
